George Jerome Mitchell

George Jerome Mitchell, 79, of Taylors, a retired pastor and public school teacher, died Oct. 1, 2009, at St. Francis Hospital, Greenville.

Born Jan. 12, 1930, in Greer, he was a graduate of Greer High School, North Greenville College and Furman University.

Mitchell pastored Beaverdam Baptist Church in Laurens and Cross Plains Baptist Church in Greenville, where he had helped the church build its new sanctuary. He baptized 54 candidates at one of the evening services and pastored Shady Grove Baptist Church in Piedmont. He also served a church in North Carolina.

Mitchell taught at Slater Marietta High School, North Greenville College, Boiling Springs junior-high and high schools, Spartanburg Methodist College and Dan Greer Bible Institute.

He was a notary public and he delivered mail for 10 years. He was a member of Blue Ridge Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ellen Bates Mitchell, and a daughter.
