Providence Baptist celebrates 115 years

The Baptist Courier

Providence Baptist Church, Pageland, observed 115 years of service Sept. 20 with more than 350 in attendance. Billy King was guest speaker at the homecoming. Steve Neal, pastor at the time the church burned in 1971, unveiled a granite monument containing the cornerstone from the burned building. The monument was placed at the location of the original church. Providence was organized in 1894 with services held in a one-room school until the first church was built in 1896. Several additions and changes were made to the church between the mid 1930s and the early 1960s, resulting in a two-story brick building that was lost to fire in 1971. The current sanctuary and educational wing were rebuilt in 1972 and 1974, with the addition of the family life center in the early 1990s.
