The North Greenville University community gathered recently to recognize four families for their financial generosity in the past year. Four inaugural awards were presented.
Brashier
Todd
McCormickJ. Lee McCormick, of York, retired vice president for academic affairs, received the Faculty/Staff Heritage Award, given to a current or retired member of the university family whose gifts embody the spirit of NGU. McCormick served 30 years in public education before he and his wife Barbara joined the university administration in 1996. He was previously honored in 2007 with the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award. McCormick is a member of First Baptist Church, Clover.
The Fred C. and Katherine B. Andersen Foundation of Bayport, Minn., received the Foundation/Corporation Award of the Year. Incorporated in 1959, the Andersen Foundation supports education, medical research, children, youth development, arts and culture, and community development. The foundation has provided grant assistance to NGU since 1998 totaling $2.2 million.
G. Elton Todd of Greer received the Board Leadership Award, presented to a member of the university’s board of trustees whose support serves as an example to others. Todd, a retired CEO, and his wife Doris are lifelong philanthropists for higher education. The university dining hall is named in honor of the couple. Todd is a member of Edwards Road Baptist Church in Greenville.
T. Walter Brashier of Travelers Rest received the Stewardship of the Year Award, given to the family whose generosity of resources exceeds all others during the past year. He and his wife Christine have established, in addition to other gifts, the Brashier Family Endowment Scholarship to provide assistance to students pursuing church-related ministries. In 2005 they gave $1 million to establish the university’s T. Walter Brashier Graduate School. Brashier is a member of Berea First Baptist Church in Greenville.
