The Lowcountry Pregnancy Center in Charleston recently received volunteer assistance from dozens of men.
Volunteers are working hard to finish renovations at the Lowcountry Pregnancy Center in Charleston. In a city that has the largest abortion clinic in South Carolina, the Lowcountry Pregnancy Center has been an alternative presence in Charleston for 23 years. The center has 10 staff members and 60 volunteers, and offers pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, prenatal care, parenting classes, post-abortion counseling and other services.
The center was in the same location for 20 years, but the area had become unsafe. For the security of the staff, volunteers and clients, director Faye Hill and the center’s board began searching for a new location.
A suitable building was found, but the rent was prohibitive. The property owners prayed about the matter and cut the rent nearly in half. They offered the center a few months of rent-free occupancy so renovations could be made.
Hill appealed to the center’s donors for assistance in getting the building ready. The majority of volunteers were men who came from local churches to donate time and building materials. They removed carpeting, sanded and painted walls, put in new walls, removed ceiling tiles, and did electrical work.
Hill said workers have been coming after work and on Saturdays, at all hours of the day and night. People of all ages, from college students to retirees, have worked at the center to help complete renovations.
“In only four weeks, it is amazing how much work has been done,” she said.
About 22 churches are involved with the project. Some churches adopted rooms to refurbish. Some painted scripture verses on unfinished walls to inspire others who are working to complete the renovations.
Hill hopes renovations will be completed by Dec. 1.
