Josh Kimbrell presented E.A. McDowell Award by SCBC Cultural Life and Public Affairs Committee.

Messengers adopt nine resolutions from Resolutions Committee with only minor language revisions to resolution on hate crimes legislation.


3:15 p.m.

Retiring S.C. Baptist Foundation president Weldon Fallaw presented governor’s Order of the Palmetto.

Resolutions Committee Report scheduled for 3:40 p.m.

Nominations Committee report adopted.

Motion calling for study committee to determine feasibility of SCBC president also serving as Executive Board president fails. Wayne Dickard spoke in support of the motion. Mike Hamlet, pastor of North Spartanburg First Baptist, spoke in opposition.

Motion requiring every SCBC employee to be Southern Baptist fails. Wayne Dickard presented the motion. Jim Stovall, a messenger from Taylors First Baptist Church, spoke in opposition to the motion.

Messengers approve a motion instructing SCBC Executive Board not to employ outside business consultants until economy rebounds. Motion was presented by Mike Moody, pastor of Honea Path First Baptist Church.

$32 million 2010 SCBC budget as presented in book of reports has passed. Budget reflects 6 percent decrease from last year’s budget.


11:00 a.m.

A motion from Mike Moody, pastor of Honea Path First Baptist Church, to amend the 2009-2010 SCBC budget to reflect a 6 percent increase across the board failed by a show of ballots. Moody’s amendment would have restored the budget to 2008-2009 levels.


10:20 a.m.

During the morning business session, Wayne Dickard, pastor of Northbrook Baptist Church, Boiling Springs, introduced a motion that would require any employee of the South Carolina Baptist Convention to be a member of a Southern Baptist church. The motion was seconded and referred to committee.

Dickard also introduced a motion to study the feasibility of having the president of the state convention also serve as chairman of the SCBC Executive Board. The motion was seconded and referred to committee.
