Volunteers make repairs to an outdoor chapel at Pinehill Baptist Retreat. The volunteers built picnic tables, upgraded bathroom facilities and enhanced the outdoor chapel at the 48-year-old camp, which is owned by Pee Dee Baptist Association but is available for use by churches from other associations.
The trip to Pinehill followed the group’s fall meeting at Edmunds RV Park near Lexington. During the meeting, El Rauton of Charleston was elected president of SCCOM.
SCCOM will hold its Winter Gathering and luncheon Jan. 9 at the South Carolina Baptist Convention building in Columbia from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The group will discuss future missions projects, including a return trip to Pinehill in the spring to work on the boys dormitory. Also, immediately following the January meeting, a team will leave for Key West, Fla., to help with repairs at Fifth Street Baptist Church, which still is trying to rebound from hurricanes that devastated the area several years ago.
Camp Pinehill was built in the 1960s. Through the years churches and individuals have supported the camp and helped it grow. In 1977, the Little Rock Cabin was built to house missionaries and other speakers. In 1978, a new dining hall was opened. A new dormitory opened in 1989.
Donald Foreman has served as camp director for the last 13 years. In 2009 there were 604 campers, with 100 salvations reported.
