First Bethany Baptist Church, McCormick, celebrates bicentennial

The Baptist Courier

First Bethany Baptist Church of McCormick, one of the oldest churches in Edgefield Baptist Association, celebrated its 200th anniversary Nov. 8.

In 1808, inhabitants of Coffeetown and Hardlabor Creek came together to build Bethany Meeting House. In 1809, members from Fellowship and Plum Branch churches joined with the worshippers at Bethany and formed a constitution. In 1850, a new house of worship was built at Shinburg Muster Ground near Longmire’s Post Office, the site of the present church building.

“No Greater Love: A History of First Bethany Baptist Church,” was completed in time for the anniversary celebration.

Approximately 200 attended the celebration. In addition to pastor Lloyd Prince, speakers included C.B. Love Jr., pastor emeritus; Robert Williamson, director of missions; and Jim Austin, executive director of the South Carolina Baptist Convention.
