Marshall and Humphreys headline speakers for Hamrick Lectures

Molly Marshall, president of Central Baptist Theological Seminary, and novelist Josephine Humphreys will be the featured speakers for the 15th annual John Hamrick Lectureship at First Baptist Church, Charleston, Jan. 17-18.

Marshall, who spoke at the lectureship in 1998, is the author of numerous books, including “Joining the Dance,” “A Theology of the Spirit,” “What It Means To Be Human,” and “No Salvation Outside the Church?” She is a graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University and holds master of divinity and Ph.D. degrees from Southern Seminary. She has completed further study in Jerusalem, Cambridge and Princeton. Prior to her tenure at Central Seminary, she was an associate professor of theology at Southern Seminary.

Marshall will speak at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 17, and again at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 18. Her theme is: “Reading Scripture with the Spirit.”

Josephine Humphreys won the 1985 Hemingway Award for a first work of fiction. Her book, “Rich in Love,” was turned into a motion picture. She has also authored “Nowhere Else on Earth,” “Fireman’s Fair,” and “Dreams of Sleep.” She is a speaker and teacher at numerous writing workshops. Humphreys taught in the English department of Charleston Southern University. She will speak on her “Charleston Connection,” at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 18.

The Hamrick Lectures were established to honor the life and work of the late John A. Hamrick, pastor of First Baptist Church of Charleston for 29 years and the founding president of what is now Charleston Southern University. The lectures are free and the public is invited.
