On Feb. 17, 2008, Hillcrest Baptist in Dalzell burned down to the ground. Wayne Hunter, who was pastor at the time of the fire, and the Hillcrest Baptist congregation committed themselves to rebuilding the burned church. Private donations came in, and Hunter and his wife gave $32,000 to complete the plumbing and other building costs.

On Nov. 6, the 66-year-old pastor suffered a mild stroke on his left side. He had been helping to clear a road to the new church on the day of his stroke.

The church building is now finished, and the name has been changed to The Lighthouse Church. The new pastor is Doug Dixon. Hunter is recovering and undergoing therapy. He said he would like to see the church filled with families from the Shaw Air Force Base and Dalzell communities.
