Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community in Laurens held its annual “Christmas Memories at the Villa” on Dec. 10. Guests were able to step back in history to enjoy an old-fashioned Christmas celebration.

The historic Italian villa is located in Laurens on what is now the Martha Franks property.

Staff members dressed in clothing from 1861, when the Villa was built, and served up delicious food, music and tours.

Residents of the retirement community, family, friends, church groups and guests all enjoyed the fellowship and fun.

Southern Baptist missionary Martha Franks made several trips to China during her retirement years, acquiring authentic pieces to furnish and decorate the Villa, and also to sell to raise money for opening the retirement center back in 1985.

Most of the ornaments on the Villa tree were handmade by “Miss Martha” herself. The house is full of pieces resounding with Baptist history and South Carolina history. Today the Villa is used mainly for events, tours, weddings and parties.
