Covenant Church, Anderson, provides opportunities, people respond to serve

Starting in a small storefront location 13 years ago, Covenant Church, Anderson, has settled into its 54,000-square-foot building with 600-700 in worship. It’s a story of God’s goodness and grace, and a story of providing discipleship options and opportunities for service.

Covenant pastor Steve Silvey

That’s the assessment of pastor Steve Silvey, who continues his service as the church’s first pastor.

“We believe disciples are created through solid biblical teaching, explaining the mission of the church, the role of the member, and then challenging people to get involved,” Silvey said. “We also believe in creating opportunities.

“I don’t believe you bawl people out for what they aren’t doing. You teach them that God created a purpose for them, and create opportunities for them to use their gifts,” he said.

When presented that way, “people step up to the plate and serve. The problem is that many don’t know where they can get involved.”

Moving people toward discipleship and a service mindset occurs through a strong Sunday school, Silvey said, and “it’s important to create multiple options for people. We work to have quality teachers and create class options for people to fit into. As we’ve built space and relocated in 2007 we have created options and experienced growth. Discipleship takes place, and people are then in a spiritual place to respond to ministry opportunities.”

Silvey knows God uses the strategy. The church baptized 40 in 2009 and hopes to average one per week in 2010. Ministry events like Judgment House at Halloween resulted in 153 salvations. The church has also worked in ministry activities through the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department.

“Not everyone saved at these events will find membership at Covenant,” Silvey said. “But we do enjoy growth as a result of our people becoming disciples, getting involved in ministry, and helping others discover Jesus.” – SCBC
