Officials at South Carolina Baptist Ministries for the Aging hope South Carolina Baptists will be generous in supporting the annual Mother’s Day Offering.
Proceeds from the offering, collected through South Carolina Baptist churches, was used for several years to support capital improvements at the ministry’s two facilities – Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community in Laurens, and Bethea Baptist Retirement Community in Darlington.
However, in 2008, SCBMA trustees voted to begin using the Mother’s Day Offering to establish a fund to provide supplemental financial assistance to retired South Carolina Baptist pastors and missionaries and their spouses.
“The level of support this offering has had over the last two years tells us that South Carolina Baptists want to demonstrate a genuine concern for this state’s aging population,” said SCBMA president Tom Turner.
In 2009, the first two beneficiaries of the fund were introduced, Henry Rogers and Margaret Atkinson.
South Carolina Baptists gave $164,578 through the Mother’s Day Offering in 2009. In 2008, the offering totaled $280,000.
