Pleasant Hill to celebrate 175 years

The Baptist Courier

Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Greer, will celebrate its 175th anniversary on May 2. An 11 a.m. worship service will be followed by lunch in the church’s family life center.

Pleasant Hill Baptist Church

The church had humble beginnings. On May 3, 1835, a group of Christians assembled for worship in the home of William Crane. The first meeting house, as the charter members called it, was located near Mitchell’s Spring on Donahue Road. Thomas Rice was called as the church’s first pastor in 1835.

In 1857, the church began meeting in a new building. The members met there until 1879, when another building was constructed across the road. In 1936, the church was blown to the ground and was rebuilt. Members still worship in the rebuilt sanctuary today. A family life center was constructed in 1998.

Current pastor Terry Greene was called in July 2002. Gerald Turner is music director, and Andy Jones is children and youth pastor. Pleasant Hill has 390 members on roll.
