I want to address a decision made at our most recent South Carolina Baptist Convention meeting in Columbia that we not use the $7 million-plus in the reserve fund that we have on hand.
While our “Great Commission” is to go make disciples, I don’t believe that ought to be at the expense of forsaking those who, for the most part, have spent their lives making disciples (i.e., missionaries, pastors, widows, denominational workers, etc.). I speak of those who live at our homes for the aged in Laurens and Darlington. This is biblically honorable to be involved in such a ministry.
Even more deplorable is to lower support for our schools: Anderson, North Greenville, and Charleston Southern universities. Many of our spiritual leaders for the future are there now preparing to lead us. Is it not a wise decision on our part to invest in their lives now since they are preparing to lead us?
And even more ridiculous is to hold the money for hard times. These are hard times in our state and nation. Checked the unemployment rate lately?
Did God not give us what we have? We preach and talk and write about how God owns it all. If God gave us what we have, can he not do it again, and again, and more?
I hear preachers saying over and over, and I agree: “Time is short.” Surely the time of our Lord’s return is near. Well, I sure hope he doesn’t return and we South Carolina Baptists are holding $7 million we plan to spend some day. Hey guys, this is the day! If I’m misinformed, somebody please tell me.
