During Vacation Bible School June 21-25, the children and youth of Tyger Baptist Church, Taylors, learned about Joseph as they journeyed to “Egypt.” Total enrollment for the week was 50, with 15 youth serving as VBS leaders. Katie Doll, who was critically injured in a go-cart accident in 2008, was the recipient of the mission offering of $619.

 

Brandon Dawkins was recently recognized by First Baptist Church, Gaston, for having been chosen to represent South Carolina at the National Special Olympics. He will compete in the shot put, javelin throw, and 400-meter fast walk. The national games will be held in Nebraska on July 18-24. Pictured with Dawkins, a recent Swansea High School graduate, are his parents, Steve and Christina Dawkins, along with Deborah Harrison and pastor Larry Harrison.

 

Fairview Baptist Church in Spartanburg held Vacation Bible School during the week of June 21. The theme was Saddle Ridge Ranch, and offerings were received for Mission Haiti and Operation Christmas Child. Average attendance was 97.

 

On June 13, Ben Avon Baptist Church in Spartanburg held a day of appreciation for Curt and Dot Floyd, whose combined years of membership total 65. In addition to testimonials from family and friends, letters of congratulations from Johnny Hunt, president of the Southern Baptist Convention; Jim Austin, executive director-treasurer of the South Carolina Baptist Convention; and South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford were read. Pastor Richard King said, “This couple has so freely given of their time, talents and resources to the glory of God.”

 

Teeka Holtzclaw and Brenda Lee from Trinity Way Baptist Church, Greenville, recently spent a week in Honduras visiting children that the church sponsors. The church and individuals at Trinity Way sponsor 23 children and one pastor. Dennis Holtzclaw is pastor.

 

Waccamaw Baptist Association recently combined outreach efforts with South Carolina Faith Riders during Bike Week at Myrtle Beach. Chris Jones, who donated a Harley Davidson motorcycle in honor of her son Scott Moore, hands South Carolina Faith Riders state coordinator Dwight Mobley the winning entry card. The winner was Dania Latagne of Moncks Corner.

 

During a week filled with crafts, hayrides, cowboy and cowgirl contests and a chili cook-off, five children accepted Christ and an average of 90 attended nightly during Vacation Bible School at Beaver Creek Baptist Church, Neeses.

 

Two Sunday school teachers with more than 100 years of combined teaching experience were honored recently at Hyde Park Baptist Church, Greenwood. Dean Crout (top photo, left), was honored on May 9, Mother’s Day, for teaching more than 50 years. She teaches the senior ladies Agape Class. Gene Gamble (bottom photo, left), who also has taught Sunday school for more than 50 years, was recognized June 20, Father’s Day. He currently teaches the adult couples class. Pastor Tommy Thurston presented certificates of appreciation and plaques to both teachers.
