Time to ‘just pray’

The Baptist Courier

God’s Word is full of promises to us. God is not a god who created the world and set it in place, leaving the rest to us. He is a father who is interested in each and every activity, thought, and need of his children. Over and over, Scripture reminds us that God wants fellowship with us. He also leads us, teaches us, and disciplines us. As his children, we need and should desire his teaching, leadership, and even the discipline.

We, as committed believers, are aware of the direction in which our country is going. The greatest concern we should have is its moral and spiritual direction. We talk about the need for change, but we feel powerless, and we just hope that somebody will do something. We could speak out against the infringement of the Christian values our founding fathers believed in and put into our Constitution, but there is an even more powerful and effective way that we can be involved in changing the direction of our country.

That way is to pray as God directs in 2 Chronicles 7:14. Many of us are probably doing that in our petitions to God. But this verse doesn’t say “if a few people,” but “if my people.” It doesn’t say “if all the people,” it just says “if my people.” We should not expect or wait on others.

I’m asking that God’s people be concerned enough about our country to follow the moral laws of the Scripture and not of the world. I’m praying for a movement among God’s people – individuals, churches, and associations of churches – to encourage every Christian in this country to “humble themselves and pray.”

In reading the Scripture that relates to Israel in the time of the judges, we find that each time their nation humbled themselves and prayed, God saved their nation. He answered their plea each time in spite of the fact that Israel would return to their sins over and over.

God did it then and will do it again if we will ask – humbly, persistently, and with faith. It is more important than anything else we could be doing right now. Just pray!
