This is in response to David Martin’s letter in your July 22 issue. He said, “I believe it is clear who has control.” If that were true, there would have been no need for the article on the problem of church control (“Church control is top reason for forced pastor terminations in S.C.,” July 8).
He makes the point that Christ is the true head of the church. No argument there from anybody. He said, “The primary responsibility of the preacher is to teach the word of God.” Without any authority? It is a high calling. It comes with great responsibility, to be approved unto God and to give an account to him for the flock as no board member will ever do, executive or otherwise.
Let us respect the analogy Jesus used: “Feed my sheep.” Sheep are pretty dumb animals, easily led, and misled. The shepherd does not shout encouragement from the sidelines as the flock wanders to and fro, forming a succession of alliances with one committee after another. The shepherd leads the sheep – just ask your nearest border collie.
