In these times of unprecedented uncertainty, our Lord Jesus Christ offers both the security every believer desires and the hope every believer needs. Security comes, in part, from being a member of the family of God that we call the church. Hope emanates from a relationship with Christ here on earth, a relationship that continues throughout all eternity.
Jim AustinLeading the church during this earthly pilgrimage are the pastor and staff of each local congregation. These God-called servants preach and teach God’s holy Word, provide godly counsel from it, pray on behalf of those with special needs, equip believers to effectively reach the lost, and provide disciplining for the saints. They also shepherd (care for and look after) the flock of God known as the church.
Many times these servants serve with minimal affirmation, long hours, and added stress from carrying the burdens of those with whom they minister. Additionally, they serve by managing their own households well and by living above reproach.
In my role as executive director-treasurer, I am privileged to regularly interact with these godly men and women as they serve our Lord by ministering to His church. The South Carolina Baptist Convention is truly blessed to have such faithful servants working in and serving our local congregations.
Traditionally October is set aside as Clergy Appreciation Month, a time to show appropriate recognition to those who faithfully serve the Lord by serving the bride of Christ. Allow me please to encourage each church leader to make a special effort to show appropriate appreciation to those who serve our Lord by serving His church. All affirmations do not have to be costly, and could be as simple as providing childcare for the pastor and wife, or staff member and spouse.
Appropriate expression of appreciation during a worship service is always in order, and giving a gift card for anything, ranging from a ticket to an opera to a purchase from a tractor supply store – or anything appropriate between those two extremes – is always appreciated.
Most of all, assure each of these faithful servants of your diligent prayer for them and gratitude for their faithful service. You will be blessed through these efforts, and the churches of our Lord will be enriched.
