Goucher Baptist Church, Gaffney, will celebrate its 240th anniversary Oct. 23 and 24.
An old-fashioned singing will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 23. On Sunday, Oct. 24, the worship service will begin at 10 a.m. and will include guest speakers, dramas, music, slide presentations and more. A covered-dish luncheon will follow.
Church members have been clearing a path to the more-than-100-year-old baptismal pool on Goucher Creek so that visitors will be able to view the site. Also, a new church history room will be opened. Among other relics and documents from the church’s past will be an old pew, offering plates and a pew Bible.
A new history of the church, “Upon this Rock,” written by Miriam Ivey, will be available for sale. The title comes from a foundation rock found at the site of the church’s first log-cabin structures. The book weaves the pre-Revolutionary War history of the church with the history of the country and of Cherokee County.
Goucher is the 13th oldest Southern Baptist church in the state. Norman R. Gardner is pastor.
