Silent when we shouldn’t be?

The Baptist Courier

“Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.” Hallowed – holy be your name! Is God’s name holy any more?

Everywhere I go, I hear, “Oh, my God!” or “geez,” and many call themselves Christians. We defend them by saying, “It’s just a habit – they mean no harm; they don’t even think anything about it.” But this in itself is sad.

One of the commandments tells us not to take the name of God in vain. Are they not doing just that? Some of us pride ourselves on our “Oh, my gosh” instead. Isn’t “gosh” slang for God? I sincerely hope not, as we creatures of habit use the expression very often.

Every time I hear someone say, “Oh, my God!” should I ask, “Why are you praying to God?” Calling on his help? What does a Christian do? I can’t believe God wants us to listen in silence, but I, like many weak Christians, hesitate to offend someone – although what they say is offensive to me.
