As we near the time of our South Carolina Baptist Convention, let us all remember where God has brought us from.
Let us remember when North Greenville University was about to close her doors for lack of students. Remember when Anderson University was in financial trouble and when Charleston Southern faced the most difficult times ever. Remember how our process worked. Through our nominating committees of our convention, we sought men and women of God to serve as trustees who stood on the Word of God, and these trustees sought out presidents and leaders to guide our schools and other institutions. Look carefully today and see how God has, and is, blessing us.
Look carefully at how God has used Dr. Jairy Hunter, Dr. Jimmy Epting, and Dr. Evans Whitaker at our universities. Thousands of students, young people, are being saved, trained and sent out from our schools and state to serve our Lord Jesus Christ. God has richly blessed us.
If we truly want young people and young adults to lead in our convention, then let us not turn our backs on our institutions. We have a wonderful working relationship between our institutions and our state convention. Instead of turning our backs on them, let us embrace them as never before. This is a mission field, as these are sending out missionaries throughout our state and the world. What an exciting time in our convention to stand together as never before.
As for the older generation, let us not forget the wisdom that comes from their experiences. There is no generation gap in the family of God. We need one another.
Back when I was a teenager, I had a pastor who wanted to rid the church of the old leaders – and he did. When the younger ones became the leaders, carnality came with it, and division. Much godly wisdom had been erased, and today that church struggles to keep its doors open.
May young and old reach out to one another. We need the young with their vitality and strength. We also need the elderly with their wisdom and knowledge. He who walks with wise men shall be wise.
May we stand together and support our institutions as never before!
