The Christian Life and Public Affairs Committee of the South Carolina Baptist Convention recognized Fred Payne with the 2010 E.A. McDowell Award during the Wednesday morning session of the SCBC annual meeting in Columbia.

Payne was recognized for his “outstanding record of Christian involvement in the public arena of government and community affairs.” He is currently serving a second term as chairman of the Intergovernmental Relations and Administration Committee on the Greenville County Council.
The award recognizes Payne’s community involvement in the areas of public transportation, crime watch groups, public water issues, and the technical school system. He serves as board chairman of the Baptist Foundation of South Carolina and is an active member of First Baptist Church, Simpsonville.
“I am honored to receive this award. God has allowed me to have a great career as an educator, fundraiser and civil servant. My prayer is that God would use me to transform the lives of people with whom I come in contact,” Payne said.
The E.A. McDowell Award is given annually in recognition of an individual’s service to family, church, and the community.
