Mastering self subject of Bishop’s book

The Baptist Courier

This is the gist of it: To be free, master yourself. The title of Greer author Gene Bishop’s new book is longer: “No Man Or Woman Is Free Who Has Not Mastered Themselves.”

All proceeds from the sale of the book will go to Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, where Bishop grew up in the 1940s and 1950s. In fact, Bishop, the president and founder of People and Solutions, Inc., thought about giving his latest book the title, “All I Ever Really Needed To Know, I Learned At The Children’s Home Where I Was Raised.”

He already had written a memoir of his days at the Greenwood campus of the South Carolina Baptist institution which he gave the title, “If Being Raised In An Orphanage Was So Bad, Why Did I Like It So Good?”

In opening remarks for his new book, Bishop wrote, “Connie Maxwell Children’s Home made a profound impression on me, and my values came from the dedicated staff members who loved me and guided me through those impressionable and formative years.”

Subtitled “Fourteen Days That Will Change Your Life,” the book contains a chapter for every day of those two weeks with wisdom and inspiration culled from a variety of authors and magazines, most of it collected by Bishop, a self-described “cutter outer” who clipped away at magazines, newspapers and other publications for 35 or 40 years, cataloging them according to subject.

If every chapter is not as inspiring as another, choose one that peaks your interest and “then go on from there” is the author’s advice on reading the book.

Bishop, a Greenville native, received his education at North Greenville College and Furman University. He is a former board chairman at Connie Maxwell.

The book is priced at $17.95 plus $3 for shipping, but the author recommends that in return for a copy of his book, a donation of $20 to $25 be made to Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, P.O. Box 1178, Greenwood, S.C. 29648-1178, Attn: Book Donation.
