Churches lack theology

The Baptist Courier

I have no problem with drama being used to convey the gospel message. However, I agree with the letter writer who took issue with this actor/speaker’s choice of words when describing the atonement: “It makes it much easier to understand why Jesus died of a broken heart” (” ‘Bum’ speaks in chapel, shocks students,” Dec. 23.)

Jesus did not die of a broken heart. Where in Scripture are we told this? Nowhere. This is an attempt by the actor/speaker to manipulate the emotions of his hearers. Like others who’ve responded to this story have pointed out, this is not the gospel at all.

I feel there is an acute lack of basic Bible theology in our Baptist churches today. This speaker’s understanding of the gospel illustrates my point.
