Dual evangelism conferences set for February

Don Kirkland

Dual evangelism conferences sponsored by the South Carolina Baptist Convention are set for February in Anderson and Florence.

The first conference will be held Feb. 21-22 at Anderson University in conjunction with the celebration of its 200th anniversary, and Feb. 23-25 at Hoffmeyer Road Baptist Church in Florence.

Ron Barker of the SCBC’s evangelism and missions team said video streaming is planned for the speakers at the Anderson site, along with the breakout session, “The generational hand-off: Sharing the same message in different ways and times,” to be led by Don Wilton, pastor of First Baptist Church in Spartanburg, and his son, Rob, who is the lead pastor for Vintage Church in New Orleans.

The Spartanburg pastor is scheduled to speak at the Anderson and Florence meetings.

Other speakers at Anderson University are Jay Hardwick, lead pastor for Awaken Church in Columbia; Alvin Reid, professor of evangelism and student ministry, Southeastern Seminary; and Ralph Douglas West, pastor and founder of Brookhollow Baptist Church, Houston.

In addition to Barker, who is evangelism and prayer strategist for the SCBC, and Wilton, speakers at the Florence meeting are Hampton Drum, pastor, South River Baptist Church, Statesville, N.C.; Thomas Hammond of the personal evangelism team at the North American Mission Board; Phil Hoskins, pastor, Higher Ground Baptist Church, Kingsport, Tenn.; Randall Jones, retired pastor of Langston Baptist Church, Conway; Fred Luter, pastor, Franklin Avenue Baptist Church, New Orleans; Bob Pittman of Bob Pittman Ministries, Muscle Shoals, Ala.; Herb Reavis, pastor, North Jacksonville (Fla.) Baptist Church; and Ted Traylor, pastor, Olive Baptist Church, Pensacola, Fla.

Musicians for the Anderson event include Lee McDerment and Mosaic. Special music for the Florence conference will be provided by Marc Ivey, Sammy Thomas and The Whisnants.

Times for the conferences, with a schedule for the speakers, are available at the South Carolina Baptist Convention website (http://www.scbaptist.org/evangelism/evangelism.htm).

The Anderson conference, which will feature the breakout sessions, was planned in cooperation with university leaders who hope to attract a number of students, as well as pastors and others, to the two-day meeting.

Barker said the breakout sessions, ranging in topics from “How to reach international students” and “Evangelism through Vacation Bible School” to “How to make your church visitor friendly” and “Disaster: You’ve lost everything?-?Not!” are aimed at making a variety of ministries of the church and the state convention “more intentionally evangelistic.”

Themes for the conferences are “We own the night” at Anderson and “Evangelism: Proof of ministry” in Florence.
