Pyerian Baptist Church, Dillon, held a special service Jan. 9 to mark the retirement of the mortgage on its $1.3 million sanctuary and classroom complex. The mortgage was paid off nine years early.

Delivering the first of two messages, Ron Taylor, director of missions for Pee Dee Baptist Association, pointed to the growing need to reach the people of Dillon County, especially those in multihousing areas.

Former pastor Daryl Tanner brought the second sermon. He told of the original vision for the new sanctuary and how the church remained constant in its support of missions and needs around the world, including the purchase of a new truck for missionary couple Chris and Donna Williams in Honduras, and generous donations to help with Hurricane Katrina relief.

The note was burned by church treasurer Neil Herring, now in his 51st year of service, along with all the deacons and those who served on any of the committees for the planning and construction of the church.
