Hubert “Hugh” Garrell, 82, of Columbia, a retired military chaplain and pastor, died Jan. 16, 2011.

Born May 28, 1928, in Lumberton, N.C., he was a graduate of Wake Forest University and Southeastern Seminary.

He served as a pastor in North Carolina from 1955 to 1958, after which he entered the U.S. Army as a chaplain. In 1976 he retired as a Chaplain Lt. Col., having served in Korea as well as in the Vietnam War as a member of the 5th Special Forces Group (Green Berets).

Following his retirement from the Army, he served as an associate pastor at Crescent Hill Baptist Church, Columbia, and as pastor of Little River Baptist Church, Jenkinsville. In his final position as a minister, he served more than 10 years as associate pastor at First Baptist Church of Columbia.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Faye Garrell, two children, nine grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by his first wife, Jeanne Frances Garrell.
