Former Florida State University football coach Bobby Bowden visited Kingstree April 7 to speak at the first Black River Sportsman’s Banquet.

Retired FSU football coach Bobby Bowden, center, enjoys a light moment with the line crew from Santee Electric Cooperative.

The event, which included involvement by several area Baptist churches, was held at Santee Electric Cooperative. More than 200 of the 800 people who attended made decisions for Christ, a spokesman said.

Bowden talked about his family, his football teams and his Christian faith. He spoke on the importance of making oneself available for Christ.

Planning for the event started in November 2009. “Without the help and support of the local churches, businesses and individuals, this would not have happened,” event chairman Stephen Williamson said.

The banquet was free and included a meal of barbecue turkey, slaw and bread. “Everything was done by volunteers,” said Williamson.

Entertainment was provided by The Plaids and by Rex Hunter, minister of music at First Church, Florence.
