Sunday Dinner: Warm Apple Crisp

The late Roy and Gertrude Faulkner had to be pleased with the way their girls turned out.

Today we are writing about the delicious Warm Apple Crisp, made from a recipe shared with us by Faye Faulkner Johnson of Troy. A couple of times ago, we had a recipe from her sister Mildred. The sisters married cousins: Warren Johnson and Charles Johnson.

Faye, like her sister, had been a member of Mountain Creek Church all her life. Her parents carried her to church regularly when she was a youngster, and she has been a member since that time. Organized in 1798, Mountain Creek celebrated its bicentennial in 1998 and is part of Edgefield Association. Rev. Robert Huffman is currently serving as interim pastor.

Faye’s husband Warren is a deacon and the church treasurer. Faye teaches Sunday school and is active in WMU. She was formerly the church pianist, but now is the fill-in when needed.

She also has other interests. She likes gardening (both flower and vegetable), and her family maintains the grounds of Mountain Creek. She is also a member of the local volunteer fire department, helping mostly with fund-raising, etc.

Faye Johnson

Faye and Warren have two daughters. The younger is Lisa Johnson Murray. She and her late husband Billy had no children. She lives in Edgefield. Faye and Warren’s older daughter Diane and her husband, Burt Wetzel, also live in Edgefield. As much as anything, Faye enjoys being near her only grandchild, Lucy Wetzel. Lucy is a busy girl, involved in the 4-H Club and other activities. She enters her goats in goat shows and her horse in horse shows.

This is an easy recipe with no crust to make, and you probably have most of the ingredients (except possibly the apples) on hand. She recommends using one of the crisp, cooking apples such as Granny Smith for the dish rather than one of the “out of hand” varieties. Faye doesn’t remember where she got the recipe, but she has had it a long time. We thank her for sharing it with us. You can make this on Sunday morning, keep it warm, and serve it topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Now wouldn’t that be a great finish for any … Sunday Dinner!
