Letter: ‘American Idol’ Satan’s platform

The Baptist Courier

In reference to your article, “American Idol winner is a Southern Baptist” (June 9), I would like to express my concern.

Webster defines an idol as anything on which we set our affections; that to which we indulge an excessive and sinful attachment. The Bible is so forcefully against idols that I believe Christians should stay away from anything that calls itself one.

The contestants on “American Idol” are not singing gospel music and are putting themselves in compromising situations. I know that many people believe it is just an opportunity to get the gospel out, but should it be done on Satan’s platform with people such as Lady Gaga?

Southern Baptists need to repent of their support of “American Idol” and heed the words of Paul in 2 Corinthians 6:17: “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.”
