Letter: Addressing declining baptisms

The Baptist Courier

I read that baptisms are down in the Southern Baptist Convention. Is there any one cause for the decline? Is it because there are less churches and less lost people?

I believe there are several reasons. One is that couples are not having as many children as times in the past, therefore fewer children are being baptized. But that isn’t the main reason. The real reason is that Christians, including pastors, are not carrying the gospel outside the four walls of the church building. There seem to be little burden for the lost.

Paul said to the Ephesians elders, “I taught you publicly, and from house to house” That is New Testament evangelism. Only when we get back to that will we see an increase in baptisms.
