Book seeks to uplift military’s loved ones

A Simpsonville woman has published a devotional anthology for people with family members serving away from home in the military.

“Fighting Fear: Winning the War at Home When Your Soldier Leaves for Battle” debuted on Veterans Day 2011 and features insights from parents, spouses and siblings as they recount a “personal journey as God goes before his people during times of spiritual, physical and military warfare,” according to author Edie Melson.

“Saying goodbye to a loved one leaving for war is a gut-wrenching proposition,” Melson said. “But for those of us left behind, their deployment marks the beginning of our battle. And yet, it is possible to find God’s peace in the midst of fear and conquer the terror that lurks in the darkness of doubt.”

“Fighting Fear” includes contributions from those whose experiences span generations – from World War II to the present conflict in Afghanistan.

The author knows firsthand the struggles of which she writes: Her son went straight from high school graduation to boot camp and then to Iraq, where he served two tours.

Melson, a member of Simpsonville First Baptist Church, is a freelance writer and editor with more than 16 years experience in the publishing industry. She is the co-director of the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference and writes a blog, “The Write Conversation.”
