Finally, a White House spokesman has taken a definitive stand on a hot topic. But it’s not the economy, global warming, or international terrorism. It’s the White House position on extraterrestrials.
WeathersLast month, the British media reported on a story from Washington that was barely mentioned in the American press. In submissions to the “We the People” section of the White House website – which promised to respond to any petition with over 5,000 signatures – more than 17,000 citizens asked the government to disclose what it knows about extraterrestrials or life on other planets and to openly acknowledge any contact that scientists or the government has had with beings from outer space.
The official government response was pointed and absolute. Phil Larson, space policy expert for the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, stepped up and confidently wrote, “The U.S. government has no evidence that any life exists outside our planet, or that an extraterrestrial presence has ever contacted or engaged any member of the human race. In addition,” he continued, “there is no credible information to suggest that any evidence is being hidden from the public’s eye.”
Apparently, it’s been a while since Mr. Larson read the New Testament. Of course, God wouldn’t qualify as an extraterrestrial or a space alien. But like so many other people, Larson looks to the stars for evidence of extraterrestrials and ignores the evidence on earth that the only Being outside the confines of our planet has indeed “contacted” and “engaged” the human race. But at least he is right about one thing. God has never hidden anything from the “public’s eye,” but only from spiritual eyes blinded by sin.
The search for extraterrestrial life, I believe, is a symptom of the Fall. Just as our longing for a home will only be fulfilled by heaven, we long to know a Being greater than ourselves because we have been made to have a relationship with Him.
So He came to us. He walked among us freely, in human form and flesh, contacting, engaging, loving, living, and dying for all to see.
By the way, following this petition and Larson’s reply, the signature requirement was raised from 5,000 signatures to 25,000 to receive a White House response.
Merry Christmas.
