Capitol View: Attempts to Bring Casino to South Carolina Underway

The Baptist Courier

I would like to bring to your attention an issue that may be of serious concern to you.

Efforts are underway to bring the first-ever casino complex to South Carolina. A band of Native Americans out of Oklahoma has purchased land in Hardeeville off of I-95 to do just that.

Because the land is now owned by Native Americans, Gov. Nikki Haley has the power to allow, or not allow, the casino gaming operations to move forward. Local governments have already taken the appropriate steps for the casino to move forward.

South Carolina Baptists have adopted many resolutions through the years expressing opposition to expanded gambling in the Palmetto State. Those concerns center on destruction of families due to loss of personal relationships, financial irresponsibility, and false hope through greed. Most importantly, the Bible tells us in 1 Timothy 6:9-10 that people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction, and that the love of money is the root of all evil. Furthermore, studies often indicate an increased crime rate in communities where casinos are located, further putting the well-being of our citizens at stake.

While the most vocal argument in favor of the casino seems to be the need for jobs, Gov. Haley has indicated in her public statements that there is a better way to do that.

If you feel led to do so, I would urge you to pass this information along and to contact the governor so that our Christian voices may be heard on this issue. She can be reached by calling 803-734-2100. I would also ask that you pray for her as she makes decisions concerning this and other important issues on a daily basis.
