Letters: Fewer prerequisites, please

The Baptist Courier

We wonder why so many churches are having trouble keeping pastors. By reading the want ads and all the restrictions we put on candidates, we might understand why.

We make up a list for the perfect pastor (not even Jesus could qualify), and then we expect God to send us who and what we want. Isn’t the most important thing the fact that he is a called man of God? Why do we Baptists include so many requirements? We want him to be this tall, from this school, not over this age with this many children.

God wants every church to have the right pastor – the one he has chosen, not us. Why don’t we just place an ad that reads: “Man called by God. You pray, we pray, and God will answer.”
