Letter: Kirkland: Splendid job

The Baptist Courier

In my latest (and much loved) edition of The Baptist Courier, I read of Don Kirkland’s upcoming retirement. I rejoice for Don; I grieve for the rest of us. Don has done such a splendid job as our editor. I hate to see him go.

But as a retired minister myself (86 years old!), I know there will be mixed emotions and days and years where some days will be filled with work of various kinds. Then there will be days (though very few) with time on his hands and the days sort of drag by. That’s retirement. I also know that if a minister makes himself available, he won’t have to worry about the dreary days, because there is much work to be done in God’s creation. I retired from the Charleston Association as executive director of missions after 10 years, but I spent a total of 30 years in South Carolina. I am grateful for them all. I have stayed busy with interim work up to this very moment. Praise the Lord!

I have appreciated the person and the ministry of Don Kirkland from day one. God bless all who serve us at this splendid newspaper.
