Letter: A tent big enough for all

The Baptist Courier

Retired Baptist minister Billy Cathcart has had a particular dream for a long time. It came to him shortly after being called to pastor Highland Home Baptist Church in Gray Court in 1989, where he served until retiring in 2002. He and his wife Judy are now active members there.

His dream started with a random thought: “That big grassy field with the big oak tree would be a great place to have an old-fashioned tent revival.” He remembers his mother taking him to revivals in Union as a boy and how exciting they were – the great singing, the crowds, and the emotion when people came down to give themselves to Jesus. Billy would bring the idea up from time to time, but no one would join in the idea to set it in motion. When Billy recently mentioned his dream again to a church member, the idea took wings and the congregation got behind it.

Billy wants it known that the dream is not about him. It is a revival – a coming together to worship Jesus, a renewing of spirit and going out to spread the word that Jesus is Lord. A tent revival is wide open (like the tent itself) to one and all – no conditions, no qualifications, no dress code. People who would never darken the door of a conventional church can feel at ease at a tent revival.

A “Give Me That Old-Time Religion Gathering” will be held at 7:00 nightly May 30, 31 and June 1, 2, and 3 at Highland Home Baptist Church, 21 Equinox Rd., Gray Court. For more information, call 864-876-3402.
