Sledge recounts youth ministry in book

After more than 35 years in the ministry, Larry D. Sledge of Lexington has written a book that recalls experiences both “humorous and heart-touching” drawn from retreat settings with young people.

“Fun in the Son: How to Stay Young All Your Life” is a “combined autobiography and – personal journey” the author compiled while serving a total of seven churches in South Carolina and North Carolina.

The book relates experiences that took place at retreat settings like Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly and Fort Caswell Assembly in North Carolina, and Garden City Chapel and Retreat in South Carolina.

“My wife [Louise] and I hope to stay young the rest of our lives,” said Sledge, “and one of the best ways we have found to keep a youthful view of life is to invest time with young people.”

In the book’s introduction, Sledge writes: “Before we can be a positive influence in [young people’s] lives, we have to win their respect and confidence. This can best be done on a retreat – where we – allow them to see both our strong and weak points and learn that we are human, too.

“We have seen young people grow in their relationships to God and to each other. At the same time, we also have grown spiritually and found the secret of ‘staying young all our lives!’ “
