Letter: A ‘lighthouse’ church

The Baptist Courier

On July 22, our church wrapped up a week-long evangelistic effort with a praise and testimony service of all that God did throughout the campaign. Project SOS (Servants of the Savior) was a mission trip conducted right here at home. From block parties to backyard Bible clubs to construction projects, feeding the homeless, neighborhood canvassing, and just ministering wherever the opportunity arose, a large number of our congregation participated in this event that touched some 1,800 hearts and covered a broad area surrounding our church.

Charleston Baptist Church, located in the West Ashley area of Charleston just a couple of miles from St. Francis Hospital, is a vibrant, active church that constantly reaches beyond its walls to touch the lost and hurting. We are called a “lighthouse” church. The Courier recently ran a front-page article on a couple from the Upstate who, along with nine other adults, are coming to Charleston to plant a new church in our very area. While I would not ever presume to know what God is leading these folks to do and would never discourage any efforts to spread the gospel, let their reasoning not be because there is no “evangelical presence” in this area. We are here! And we are busy!
