The Executive Board of the South Carolina Baptist Conference of the Deaf would like to publicly thank Tim Rice of the South Carolina Baptist Convention and Vesta Sauter, Cameron and Meghan House of the International Mission Board for an outstanding workshop presentation at the annual meeting of the Conference of the Deaf at White Oak Conference Center. We had invited Tim Rice to lead a workshop on how deaf Christians can be involved in missions, both in the U.S. and overseas. Tim contacted the International Mission Board and they sent Vesta, Cameron and Meghan. Vesta is a hearing person whose parents were deaf. Cameron and Meghan are deaf. All three have experience as missionaries to the deaf overseas.
As they talked about opportunities and challenges overseas, they told of many experiences witnessing to deaf people. One amazing fact they emphasized was that although hearing missionaries sometimes spend one to two years, or more, learning the language, deaf missionaries begin communicating almost immediately. They gave several examples of deaf volunteers communicating with local deaf people shortly after the volunteers got off the plane.
Thank you, Tim, Vesta, Cameron and Meghan for an informative, inspiring and challenging workshop.
As a result of this workshop, the conference voted to “embrace deaf missions and deaf missionaries in South Asia.”
