Obituary: Jo Rice McGee

Florence Josephine “Jo” Rice McGee, 81, of Spartanburg, who served alongside her husband throughout 43 years of pastoral ministry, died June 3, 2012.

She was born in Union on May 30, 1931, and earned degrees at Mars Hill College and Furman University. She attended Southern Seminary with her husband, Michael Lewis McGee, until their first child was born.

She often served as church organist and soloist during her husband’s four decades as a pastor and in a number of his 12 interim pastorates. Mike McGee retired as pastor of Morningside Baptist Church in Spartanburg in 1996 and remains an active member there.

Jo McGee was a trip planner and guide, and led groups to New England, Pennsylvania and other locales she loved. She edited 12 cookbooks and was an avid knitter.

In addition to her husband, with whom she celebrated 60 years of marriage this year, she is survived by four children, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
