Rick Warren, one of the nation’s most well-known pastors and authors, will present the second annual session of the John A. Broadus Lectures on Preaching, Oct. 2-3 at Anderson University.

Sponsored by the university’s College of Christian Studies, the lecture series is an annual event for students and church leaders.

Warren is founder and senior pastor of Saddleback Community Church in Lake Forest, Calif., one of the 10 largest churches in the United States. His book, “The Purpose-Driven Life,” has sold more than 30 million copies, making it the best-selling hardback book (other than the Bible) in American history.

Attendance at the lectures is free and open to the public. Sessions will be held Oct. 2 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., and on Oct 3 at 10:10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

“Rick Warren is one of the most significant influencers of preaching and church life in our day, and we are delighted that he will be a part of this lecture series,” said Michael Duduit, dean of Anderson University’s College of Christian Studies.

The lectureship is named for John A. Broadus, one of the four founding faculty members of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Greenville in 1859. (The seminary moved to Louisville, Ky., in 1877.) Broadus served as professor of preaching and later as president of the seminary. His classic book, “On the Preparation and Delivery of Sermons,” was written while he was teaching in Greenville and was the nation’s preeminent text on the subject for the next century.

“Broadus was the father of modern expository preaching, and today’s great evangelical preachers are his legacy,” said Duduit, who serves as executive editor of Preaching magazine. “We are blessed to be able to reclaim this important part of South Carolina’s Christian heritage through recognizing the Broadus name in connection with this – lectureship.”
