Boones Creek Baptist Church, Salem, in Pickens-Twelve Mile Association, will celebrate its 100th anniversary in a special worship service on Oct. 14.

There will be history displays, special singing, and recognition of people who have been an integral part of the church’s history.

Services will begin at 10 a.m. and will be followed by lunch in the fellowship building.

More than a century ago, Boones Creek School was the setting for the first Sunday school classes of Boones Creek Baptist Church. The small band of worshipers dreamed of a church sitting on a knoll surrounded by a panoramic view of mountains and sky. With land donated by Frank Heaton for the church and cemetery, the church was organized with 10 members on Sept. 23, 1911. On the third Sunday of May 1912, the first services were held in the new building, with Wade Nicholson serving as the first pastor. Boones Creek joined Pickens-Twelve Mile Association the following September.

In 1951 the original church building was dismantled, and a new meeting hall was erected. In 1963 additional Sunday school classes were added. A parsonage was completed in 1976.

The current sanctuary was dedicated on Feb. 10, 1991, and the mortgage was burned in 2000.

The church has had 28 full-time and interim pastors. Allen Moore is pastor today.
