Waccamaw Association children study state missions

The Baptist Courier

Children and their leaders from churches across Waccamaw Baptist Association came together at North Conway Baptist Church on Sept. 8 for “Zowie!” an event designed to increase awareness and appreciation for state missions.

Royal Ambassador Hayes Denning carries the Christian flag for “Zowie!” a missions experience for children in Waccamaw Association.

The event, held during the 2012 Season of Prayer for the Janie Chapman Offering for State Missions, was sponsored by Waccamaw Association Woman’s Missionary Union and coordinated by Mickey Hyman, a Royal Ambassador consultant.

The theme, “Mission Possible,” encouraged children to learn, understand, and know that “with men it is impossible, but not with God: for all things are possible with God.” (Mark 10:27, KJV).

Children decorated offering envelopes with “God loves you” written in multiple languages.

Leading the missions study was Joanne Porter Morris, an educator who focused on multiethnic work (including English as a second language) and new church plants in South Carolina – Legacy Church in Myrtle Beach and Kaleidoscope in Spartanburg. Children prayed for the focus ministries, answered questions from their missions booklets, gathered canned goods for a missions project, and collected change for the Janie Chapman Offering.

Through Laverne Smoak, a nurse, children learned more about Janie Chapman, who led South Carolina Woman’s Missionary Union for many years and for whom the state missions offering is named.

An activity for the English-as-a-second-language focus area was to decorate envelopes on which “God loves you” was written in Spanish, French and Filipino. Children were encouraged to take home the envelopes to use for the Janie Chapman Offering.
