Fun + Learning = Bible Fun Field Day

Children and their leaders combined learning and fun as they participated in Bible Fun Field Day at White Oak Conference Center on Sept. 29. Occasional drizzles moved the outdoor activities into the auditorium/gym but did not dampen the enthusiasm that ruled the day.

Children learn about church planters in Miami with teacher Ron Morgan of Shandon Baptist Church, Columbia.

The field day began with an energetic opening worship session that had kids moving to music of praise. Then groups of children rotated to four classes: recreation, Bible skills, missions, and music.

In one room, children hopped from square to square on a floor mat labeled with the books of the Bible. Across the hall, a group was jump-roping to the beat of a praise song. In another room, children were “building” a church with pencils as they learned about churches being planted in cities. Over in the gym, a fast-paced game of ABC tag was followed by a reminder that to become a Christian, one must “Admit, Believe, Confess.”

Adult leaders attended the classes with their church’s children, observing the teaching methods used and often participating in the activities. “That’s a good idea,” commented Bobby Baston, youth and children’s minister of State Street Baptist Church in Cayce, as he watched two of his church’s children unscramble the words of a Bible verse by pinning index cards to the side of a large cardboard box.

“This event was designed to give fun learning experiences for children and also to serve as a leadership lab for the adults who teach them in church,” said Cindy Morris, director of the South Carolina Baptist Convention’s childhood ministry group. While her group sponsored the Bible skills and recreation classes, the SCBC’s worship and music office sponsored the music classes, and Woman’s Missionary Union sponsored the missions classes. – SCBC
