Choral singing enthusiasts in the Aiken/North Augusta area will have a rare opportunity Feb. 5 to hear a joint concert by men’s choirs from South Carolina and Georgia.

The South Carolina Baptist Singing Churchmen and the Georgia Baptist Sons of Jubal will combine to form a 130-voice choir in a concert at First Baptist Church of North Augusta. A prelude featuring small ensembles and orchestra begins at 6:30 p.m., and the main concert begins at 7 p.m.

The event is free; a love offering will be received to help fund mission projects of both groups.

The singers, most of them active or retired ministers of music, will present a varied program of sacred, gospel and praise-and-worship music.

The 50-voice Singing Churchmen group is led by Mark Powers, worship and music director for the South Carolina Baptist Convention. Jon Duncan, Powers’ counterpart for the Georgia Baptist Convention, directs the Sons of Jubal, an 80-voice men’s choir.

Powers said the Feb. 5 concert may be the first time the two groups have collaborated to do a combined concert as a part of their regular concert year, although the choirs have combined with multiple state men’s groups at Ridgecrest or for the Baptist Church Music Conference.
