Thalia E. Deaver, who has served in many capacities at Denny Terrace Baptist Church, Columbia, including the last 39 years as church clerk, was honored recently upon her retirement. Over the years she has served the church as treasurer, secretary, recording secretary and Sunday school director. She continues to serve as clerk for Columbia Metro Baptist Association, a position she has held since 1994.
A new Baptist church to reach Hispanic and Latino populations in the Upstate was planted at Locust Hill Baptist Church, Travelers Rest, on Jan. 20. The new church will be called Iglesia Cristiana Bautista Manantial de Vida (Fountain of Life Christian Baptist Church). Maciel Marques is the missionary-pastor of the new work. Bill Pfister is the pastor of Locust Hill, and Randy Bradley is director of missions for North Greenville Association. Marques, Pfister and Bradley previously worked together planting churches in Argentina. Several other pastors and church leaders are helping with the new work, Pfister said.
Cedar Grove Baptist Church, Fountain Inn, recently honored two of its oldest members, Betty Yarborough, 90, and Pauline Lockee, 89. Pastor Robert Roach presented them gifts.
Sherry Daily was baptized Dec. 16 by Harold Sanders, pastor of Wren Baptist Church, Piedmont.
The GAs and Mission Friends of First Baptist Church, Cross Hill, recently prepared 48 prison ministry bags using items donated by the church. The January mission project for Union Baptist Church, Marion Association, was to collect food items for a local soup kitchen. Jerry Cable was named deacon emeritus at Shell Point Baptist Church, Beaufort, in December. He has served as deacon chairman, Sunday school teacher, men’s Bible study teacher and a “mentor to all.”
Olivia Lewis was baptized at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Conway, on Jan. 6.
