Value All Human Life
Genesis 1:26-27; Exodus 1:15-17; Psalm 139:13-16; Mark 10:13-16
Many in our society do not view life as a gift from God. As a result, abortion, child abuse and violence plague and weaken our society. Children and the elderly – the more vulnerable members of society – need special protection and advocacy from God’s people. Believers sometimes follow comfort rather than convictions when it comes to the value of human life. Over time, even those who hold a biblical worldview on humanity may become complacent regarding the glory of God’s creative work in human beings. God wants us to show great respect for human life by opposing all behavior that threatens life from conception to natural death.
Respect and protect life (Exodus 1:15-17). When Pharaoh told the midwives to kill the Hebrew boys that were recently born, they refused. Their actions were rooted in their understanding of God and the basic wrongness of killing innocent human life. This event highlights for us the contrast and tension between secular values and the teachings of God.
As believers, we are to seek ways to protect those most vulnerable among us. Too many simply say, “It’s not my problem.” But believers must always remember the old saying that “for evil to triumph, it only takes good people doing nothing.” We demonstrate our devotion to God and our commitment to His life’s values when we get involved.
Celebrate life’s purpose (Psalm 139:13-16). Read these verses over and over. They speak of the mystery and the miracle of life. Respect for life begins when we understand that we are “fearfully” and “wonderfully made.” Respect for life begins when we accept that all life is authored by God. As we come to understand more fully the wonder of God’s creation of human life and that He has a purpose for each person, we should both praise Him and celebrate what He has done.
Follow Jesus’ example (Mark 10:13-16). Who has not had one of the following experiences: We sit silently wishing that the mother of the crying child would take the kid out. “They are disturbing everyone.” “No one can worship.” “Little kids should not be allowed in church.” I think the disciples must have been thinking something like this when Jesus rebuked them and said that children were gifts to be cherished. Rather than seeing children as a nuisance, Jesus showed that He affirmed and valued them.
All people, especially believers, should follow Jesus’ example of showing care and concern for children, including those still in the womb.
There are many things believers can do, but being silent and detached is not one of them. We, as believers, need to take the Scriptures seriously and let the Holy Spirit grow God’s truth within us. We can be good role models by showing love, patience and getting involved.
Life is a precious gift from God. Honor God by living your life for Him and His glory and working so that others will have the opportunity to do the same.
