After hearing stories of malnourished children in Guatemala, a group of 50 Charleston Southern University students attending the Converge conference at Myrtle Beach in early February felt led to respond.
“The whole weekend was about putting compassion into action,” said CSU freshman Hannah Burnett. “Wherever your heart breaks is where they were telling [us] to serve – and to show love to others.”
The students had the opportunity to contribute to World Help’s Operation Baby Rescue when one of the students learned that only a few hundred dollars more was needed to rescue a child. The initiative provides lifesaving treatment to thousands of children battling the effects of malnutrition in impoverished communities in Guatemala.
A student suggested that the group skip lunch the next day. After pooling their meal money, and with additional donations, they collected $714, which not only rescued the one child, but began the effort to rescue a second child.
“[The students] were overjoyed to give,” said campus minister Jon Davis. – CSU
