City View First Baptist to celebrate 100 years

City View First Baptist Church, Greenville, will observe its centennial celebration April 28.

A special service with guest speakers and music is planned, said pastor Mike Runion.

The idea to organize a Baptist church in the City View community on the west side of Greenville was born when a small group of people met upstairs over the Seyles Mercantile Company Store on the evening of April 28, 1913. Three weeks later, F.S. Childress was called as the church’s first pastor.

Church members built a one-room, 40-by-60-foot structure on a donated lot at the corner of Charleston and Hoyt streets.

In 1969, the church purchased the old City View School property on Charleston Street, now known as Blue Ridge Drive. The current sanctuary was built, and by 1973 a fellowship hall and gymnasium were completed.
